According to the famous explorer İnciyan, Beylerbeyi, which was called as the Gardens of the Cross becuase of a cross set Constantine the Great within the period of Roman Empire, was used as one of the private gardens of the sultans in the period of Ottoman Empire.
Current Beylerbeyi Palace was built by Sarkis Balyan, the well-known architect of the time, between 1861 and 1865 after Mahmud II's wooden shore palace was destroyed by Sultan Abdülaziz. With its cafe and sales stands in its gardens and the historical tunnel, the palace provides service to its guests as a museum-palace.
